Murphy’s character and Regan stand in some kind of basement, before an alien strikes one of its claws through a nearby wall.

As if running away from the creature in the previous shot, the man hurries through the bunker door and slams it shut.

The trailer ends with Regan and Evelyn preparing their weapons. In A Quiet Place, Regan — who is deaf — learned that the sound made by her cochlear hearing implant distresses the creatures, and weaponized it by holding the implant near a microphone. She appears here with both, as her mother loads a shotgun to finish off whatever is advancing on them.

“The people that are left are not the kind of people worth saving,” Murphy’s character whispers in voiceover.

As is the case with most sequels nowadays, there’s no absolute need for an A Quiet Place sequel. The original functions perfectly well as a standalone film with a fresh horror setting that quickly becomes an investigation of how parents protect their children in a world that seems utterly unequipped to give them the chance to grow up. But in complicating this by questioning how an apocalyptic world could bring out the best or worst in the remaining survivors — and centering the film around Evelyn as the original was centered around Krasinski’s character, Lee — A Quiet Place might just make the case for its longevity after all.

A Quiet Place Part II opens in theaters on March 20, 2020.
