New ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Posters Look Remarkably Similar to a Pair of Old Ones

Comic-Con may be over, but the hype train keeps on rolling for X-Men: Days of Future Past. Today’s new X-Men development comes in the form of two new posters that show off the film’s time-travel hook. Magneto is one part Ian McKellen and one part Michael Fassbender; Charles Xavier is one part Patrick Stewart and one part James McAvoy.

Go ahead and check out the posters below, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

The design is clear and easy to read, and both pairs of actors meld together fairly well. Fassbender seems extra-square jawed alongside McKellen, while McAvoy’s head looks much rounder then usual when blended into Stewart’s trademark chrome dome. Plus, the Xavier poster gives us another look at McAvoy’s scruffy 70s incarnation of the character (the film will follow the X-Men as they travel through time to prevent a dystopian future). But the very idea for these posters stirs a particularly unpleasant memory in a pair of similar ones for X-Men: First Class, which were so hilariously unprofessional we actually refused to post them.

It goes without saying that these posters are far better. Unlike before, everything looks as though it was done by a consummate professional- all four characters are superimposed correctly and not a single face is remotely close to anyone else’s crotch. Still, it may have been better to just avoid this idea altogether. There was plenty to love in X-Men: First Class; the same can’t be said for the film’s posters.

X-Men: Days of Future Past releases May 23, 2014 and stars McAvoy, Stewart, Fassbender and McKellen as well as Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence and Peter Dinklage.
