Can Spielberg Have the Epic ‘War Horse’ Ready By Next Year?

We know your schedule is probably full what with all the Prom invites and immigration law protest rally e-vites you’ve been receiving, but Steven Spielberg is hoping you’ll leave August 2011 open so you can check out his next directorial project.

According to Quint over at Aint It Cool (who saw the info on Production Weekly, wanted to link to Variety, but ended up linking to The Wrap), the most well-known name in directing is tackling The War Horse next.

The only thing that stands out here as odd is that everyone is reporting the story about a boy and his horse separated from each other during WWI as an epic. I have no idea where in the pre-production process everyone is, but that leaves a year and some change to get this thing locked, loaded, shot, unloaded, posted and into your theater.

It might seem like a short amount of time for a huge project, but Spielberg can certainly handle it. After all, he did Schindler’s List in 72 days and every episode of “Animaniacs” in twenty minutes. By that math, he should be able to film at least 5 epics before War Horse is released next year.

I haven’t read the novel by Michael Morpugo that the film will be based on, but I’m only hoping there’s no traumatic scene where the horse sinks into the mud.

Seriously.
