Last night on a riveting episode of Reject Radio that left every single listener in tears and fits of simultaneous, uncontrollable laughter, Robert Fure and HitFix’s Drew McWeeny both postulated some interesting theories as to why Paramount passed on Anchorman 2.
According to Deadline this morning, one of them was right.
Apparently an insider over at Paramount is revealing that:
- Neither project is totally dead.
- The studio really wants to do them…
- …for $40 million each.
The source is also claiming that Paramount is unwilling to move above that number (despite McKay and company wanting Ron Burgundy’s news team to have $70 million) because neither film had a strong showing overseas. Keep in mind that neither film had what you would call blockbuster numbers domestically either ($85 million for Anchorman and $45 million for Zoolander), but both had strong shelf lives on DVD.
This, of course, is all speculative still. However, money is never a bad answer for why anything does or does not get made.
