The Ensemble Cast For Shane Black’s Predator Reboot Looks Incredible

By  · Published on February 24th, 2017

Cameras are already rolling on the genre filmmaker’s sequel to the 1987 classic.

Shane Black’s reboot of the classic Predator action franchise is one of our most anticipated films here at Film School Rejects. The acclaimed writer-turned-director gave us the Lethal Weapon series, and in recent years has directed not one but two hilarious neo-noir capers, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys. But it was perhaps his inventive helming of the unexpectedly acclaimed Iron Man 3 that scored him this new opportunity to play with a blockbuster property – by his own rules, of course.

Earlier this week, Black tweeted a first look at the cast, and we already can’t wait. Seen with Black (in the hat) above from left to right are Sterling K. Brown (The People vs. O.J. Simpson), Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Boyd Halbrook (Narcos), Jacob Tremblay (Room), Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse) and Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele). On a first glance, the cast already appears to be a who’s-who of stars of recent pop culture hits, spanning race, gender and age. As if that weren’t enough, The Hollywood Reporter announced yesterday the addition of Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) and Thomas Jane (Boogie Nights).

Black has previously told fans that he hopes his reimagining of the franchise will have “the same sense of wonderment and newness that Close Encounters had when it first came out.” Stressing that it would not stray from the intimate nature of the first film, he added, “it doesn’t have to be fifty Predators riding motorcycles. It just has to feel like a powerful story that has a lot of flavors and textures.” And with a cast like that, Black has a fair chance of succeeding.

For now, here’s a trailer for the original film, released thirty years ago.

The Predator will be released in February 2018.
