You may never have uttered the phrase, “Man, I love Ronald Harwood!” (except for you, Mrs. Harwood), but I can almost guarantee that you’ve loved the hell out of the films he’s written. The man delivered the scripts for the James Earl Jones version of Cry, the Beloved Country, The Pianist, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
Now, he’ll be delivering the story of the greatest civil rights figure in American history.
According to Variety, the Steven Spielberg/Suzanne de Passe/Madison Jones-produced Martin Luther King, Jr biopic is moving forward by hiring the greatly talented writer to chronicle the life of the preacher’s son.
With the blessing of the King estate, the Oscar-winning writer will have access to everything the man wrote or spoke that’s legally under the purview of the estate.
Personally, I think this is an inspired choice – a brilliant writer who has proven that he can handle difficult and trenchant subject matter with a sense of heart and humor.
Now who do you get to play Martin Luther King, Jr?
