I, like many of you, have not seen Kick-Ass, but I, like many of you, have heard the geek rumblings about how ridiculously amazing super awesome spectacular it is. It tore through Butt-Numb-a-Thon back in December, and it’s earning strong reviews out of SxSW this week, but the public at large won’t get to pass judgment on the film until next month.
Our very own Brian Gibson sat down with comic book writer Mark Millar, and besides getting him to admit he suggested Macaulay Culkin and Haley Joel Osment for the main role in the movie, Gibson also got a straightforward, candid response to the ever-present question facing movies with buzz.
Will there be a sequel?
There will be a sequel. There’s just no doubt about it….it’s not being cocky with it. I love it. Everyone I know is really happy with it…and we could do a sequel relatively inexpensively.”
Simple enough.
And we should be excited about it right? Everyone seems to love the flick so far. But as someone who hasn’t seen it yet (and as much as I love to see my colleagues get excited and rally behind something), I have to admit I have no idea just how good it is.
Perhaps the more interesting aspect of this is the reality that filmmakers can now make relatively inexpensive movies and announce relatively inexpensive sequels before even finding box office success. At this point, Kick-Ass is bound to hit at least a target audience, which is really all it needs to justify a sequel. Even if it didn’t make huge returns, a sequel would still please the audience that loves the movie. And from what we’re hearing (and even from what Neil has written on this very internet constabulary of movie opinions), that audience is going to be considerable.
