Disney has signed McG to direct a remake of their very first live-action film, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The new film adds the subtitle, Captain Nemo, as it will apparently be an origin story that follows Nemo’s creation of the Nautilus.
McG is following in the successful footsteps of the once promising Gore Verbinski, who stopped by Disney to direct Pirates of the Caribbean only to disappear for five years making crappy sequels. (To be fair, he did manage to squeeze out the surprisingly good Nicolas Cage movie, The Weather Man). Disney wants the the new Nemo film to be family-friendly, and expects it to go into production this year.
The 1954 original was one of the year’s highest grossing films and won two Oscars, including one for best special effects. Will McG’s update be able to compete with that? Will there be an awesome giant squid? Will it be released in 3-D?
Who cares.
