Movie News After Dark
The day’s top headlines in bite-size portions.
Forbes has released its annual list of the most overpaid actors in Hollywood and this year top of the heap goes to Johnny Depp, whose movies return on average $1.20 for every $1.00 he’s paid for making them. Ouch. Here’s how Forbes factors things:
To compile our rundown, we looked at the last three films each actor starred in before June 2015, save animated films, movies where the actor appeared in an insignificant role, or movies that were released on fewer than 2,000 screens.
We then deducted the estimated production budget from the global box office for each film according to Box Office Mojo to come up with a limited definition of each movie’s operating income. We took the total operating income from the star’s three most recent significant films then divided by the star’s estimated pay for those films to come up with a final return on investment number.
For Depp, those three films are Mortdecai, Transcendence, and The Lone Ranger, all of which came with huge paydays for the actor, but received little love at the box office. In the number two spot was Denzel Washington, who returns a slightly-more respectable $6.50 for every dollar he’s paid, and Will Ferrell closed out the top three, earning back $6.80 for every $1 paid. Check out a video of the top five below and take note ‐ there’s not one woman on the list. Time for some wealth distribution, boys.
Trailers, trailers everywhere. Today saw three significant releases ‐ although two were teasers for trailers coming later in the week.
First up there’s a brief look at Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is most notable for giving us a glimpse at a little addition to the Spidey suit that’s a classically-inspired upgrade courtesy of Tony Stark:
Yep, those are the spider-wings designed by Steve Ditko, artist and co-creator of everybody’s favorite webhead. The full trailer launches tomorrow night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, so be sure to tune in.
Next up, an announcement video for the new Fast 8 trailer, which drops this weekend. This is mostly old stuff mixed with some personal appearances and behind-the-scenes clips, but there is a glimpse of new footage, including a look at the franchise’s newest addition, Academy-Award Winner Charlize Theron. Fun drinking game: take a shot every time someone says “family.”
As for the non-teaser variety of trailers, the second look at Fifty Shades of Grey sequel Fifty Shades Darker was released today, and it’s pretty much exactly what you were expecting: scintillating, sensual, and a little insane. James Foley (At Close Range, Fear) is the new director, and if you don’t know the basic plot by now, then you’re better off skipping to the next item. Fifty Shades Darker hits theaters on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 2017.
And now finally, because every day should end with a smile, here’s a nifty supercut from YouTube channel My VCR is Not Dead that catalogues every single gadget on the utility belt of Adam West’s Batman. “Oh come on,” you might be asking, “How many could there be?” Well, the video is five minutes long and each clip takes an average of maybe ten seconds, so you do the math. My favorite is still the shark repellent. Discover yours below.
