Lady Gaga has always been theatrical. Each meticulously planned outfit or live show or music video with an undoubtedly high production value shape her into the artist she is: the type with a kind of ubiquitous quality about her. Fans will be able to catch a glimpse into her world with the documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this month.
Gaga was basically making short films with her epic-length music videos, but she has slowly transitioned into the film and television world over the years. She got her start in two Robert Rodriguez films (not counting self-appearances): first being a role as a shapeshifting hitman in Machete Kills before booking Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Since then, she has gone on to starring in American Horror Story: Hotel, even winning a Golden Globe for Best Actress. She then guest-starred in a follow-up AHS season, Roanoke, and filmed scenes at Coachella with Bradley Cooper for A Star is Born.
Yet as much as her acting career seems to be flourishing, Gaga the human is hard enough work with its high demand for performance. Gaga: Five Foot Two appears to be a no-holds-barred approach to the singer-actress’ life behind the scenes. Promoting its cinéma vérité style, the doc chronicles a year of Gaga, covering deeply personal issues like her struggle with chronic pain as well as the production process of her fifth studio album, “Joanne.” After over 10 years in the spotlight for various reasons, she seems readier than ever to let the world into the nitty-gritty of her everyday life.
