“The hammer is my penis…”

We’ll come back to that.

Joss Whedon, along with the cast and writers of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog were on hand to talk up the three part online video series that tells the story of Dr. Horrible, a hopeful super villain trying to join the Evil League of Evil, Captain Hammer, his egotistical nemesis, and Penny, the girl they both love.  It’s a tragically funny musical with fantastic performances from Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day as the three main characters.

Big news came when they were asked what can be expected from a potential part four, even though none had yet been announced… until Whedon answered “The idea is that there will be another part… so we’re not going to tell you about it yet.”  Whedon also revealed they would be releasing the soundtrack in a couple weeks and the DVD will follow soon after.  Regarding the DVD, they announced they’ll be taking video submissions from fans wanting to join the Evil League of Evil.  “No longer than three minutes, like you’re applying for Survivor…we’ll put the ten best videos on the DVD.”

Fillion is a ham of porknormous proportions which is to the benefit of the audience as he’s fucking hysterical.  While discussing their characters, he proudly stated that “the hammer is my penis… it’s actually shaped like a little hammer.”  The crowd’s laughter was immense as the other panel members smirked at Fillion, and he added “I mean little for a hammer.”  The sweet and not so innocent Day got into the innuendo act as well.  A question was asked of every one on stage and by the time it reached her she had forgotten what it was.  “Sorry, I was twittering,” she said, oblivious as the laughter began to grow.  “Oh no! I meant online!”  The others instructed her to leave her hands on the table from that point forward.

One should never underestimate Joss Whedon’s fanbase.  This panel focusing mainly on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog was a standing-room only affair, with hundreds of people lining the hallway beforehand.  The line snaked out onto the patio where hundreds more stood or sat in the So Cal sun waiting for a chance to see Whedon and his pals.  (Note to the organizers of Comic-Con… put Whedon in Hall H.  He’ll fill it, I promise.)  Between Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly, Whedon has large and distinct groups of fans the sometimes cross over, sometimes not.  While waiting in line for the shindig I met two girls… one loved the entire Whedonverse but leaned towards all things vampiric, and the other loved Buffy and Angel but never watched Firefly.  Taste is relative though as they also admitted to liking Twilight

The series is available exclusively on iTunes and is the first thing since Natalie Portman’s naked body in Hotel Chevalier to make Apple’s service a necessity.  Fillion also shared the web page for Dr. Horrible’s Van remote control, so you can geek out with your iPhone (redundant I know) and show off to your friends.  It has limited interactivity of course, but for those in the know it’s still pretty cool.  Check it out here.
