“I think Netflix kept us on the air.”
Breaking Bad creator and executive producer Vince Gilligan said that in September at the Emmy Awards, referencing the struggles his show endured following its second season. On the same night that House of Cards became the first web-only show to win a Primetime Emmy award, Gilligan told Mashable that streaming services such as Netflix have ushered in a golden age of television, allowing audiences to consume their favorite shows at their own pace.
His creation, the story of cancer-stricken chemistry teacher Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and his former student/partner Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), now lives on Netflix in its entirety. As of Monday, one of modern television’s great dramas can be watched end-to-end on your favorite streaming device, on your schedule. As Mike once told Walter in season three, “No more half-measures.”
For those who have waited until now, I won’t delve into spoiler territory. Though in fairness, you should have been keeping up with Breaking Bad if you cared that much. The newly complete series coming to Netflix leaves you zero excuses on not being caught up. And don’t act like you have better things to do, as we all know that isn’t true. Heisenberg waits for no man, or woman, or turtle.
The streaming announcement for the final half of season five (episodes 9 through 16) is also spiced with the promise of more from the world of Breaking Bad later this year. The show’s spin-off, Better Call Saul, centered around the sleazy lawyer played by Bob Odenkirk, will air on AMC in November. Promptly upon completion of the finale, the show will be made available on Netflix.
Breaking Bad in your streaming queue and more of Saul on the horizon. For fans, the depression following the finale has been lifted just a bit. Perhaps it’s time for a complete re-watch. Just remember: tread lightly.
