There is no reason to re-reboot Planet of the Apes. Absolutely none. After five films and a lifeless version from Tim Burton back in 2002, I can see absolutely no ground to cover here.
That won’t stop Fox from re-rebooting the damned thing with Rise of the Apes. You guessed it – not only is it a reboot of the dormant franchise, but it’s a prequel. A prequel that was already covered with Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.
The silver lining, according to the report at Variety, is that WETA will be involved, and the goal will be to inhabit the world with photo-realistic apes instead of placing actors in suits.
Interesting visuals aside, it’s more retread crap from a production company that absolutely refuses to have any original ideas.
Amanda Silver (The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, The Relic) and Rick Jaffa (The Relic) are writing the screenplay, and occasional indie director Rupert Wyatt will be taking a shot at his first large studio production. These are not inspiring names.
So get ready, because on June 24th, 2011, Apes. Will. Rise.
Can anyone think of anything positive to say about this? That it’ll place more attention on the originals?
