So many post-apocalyptic films hinge on their respective apocalypses actually, well, apocalypting, so a new script from Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick sounds like a nice twist on the old trope. THR reports that the pair have penned a script titled Epsilon that centers on what happens after a robot apocalypse doesn’t pan out the way our robo-overlords would have anticipated.
The film “is set after an initial robot rebellion ended in failure and Earth operates on almost no electronics. The remaining robots seek refuge on a space station and begin to raise their own human lab rats, which they train to act as their agents. The main character is a man who discovers he is more human than he thought.” So it’s kind of like a mix of Wall-E, Terminator, Robopocalypse, and that new television show Revolution? Sold!
The screenplay hit the studios on Monday and seems to have ignited some serious interest – the outlet reports that Warner Bros. and DreamWorks were also interested, but that Sony will likely prove victorious in purchasing, as they are currently in negotiations to purchase the script for something in the $1m range. Reese and Wernick will produce the film alongside Michael DeLuca (The Social Network, Moneyball, Drive Angry).
It’s currently unknown what the tone of the film will be, but the Reporter offers up an amusing quite from “one source who read the script” who “described the project as ‘ambitious.’” And how.
Reese and Wernick have been pretty busy since the success of Zombieland – penning G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the long-talked-about Deadpool feature, an adaptation of Cowboy Ninja Viking, and that rumored Zombieland sequel.
