What Did You Watch This Weekend?

The Weekend Watch is an open thread where you can share what you’ve recently watched, offer suggestions on movies and TV shows we should check out (or warnings about stuff to avoid), and discover queue-filling goodies from other FSR readers.

The comments section awaits. I’ll get the ball rolling with the movies/TV my eyeballs took in this weekend.

It turns out the ball didn’t roll all that far this time. Look, sometimes you just have to turn off the television and head to the Oregon coast for a beach weekend with friends and without TV or WiFi. I did make it back to civilization in time to wind down with some of the past week’s shows though, and while each of the three episodes I watched have flaws they still managed to entertain.

First up was the latest Orphan Black. My episode review will be posted later today, but the short version is that this past Saturday’s was a bit of a let down. Don’t get me wrong, it ends with a fairly exciting and dramatically affecting scene, but there are also a few too many segments requiring a higher than usual suspension of disbelief. Sure the show’s about clones and corporate intrigue, but the coincidences, contrivances and idiotic character actions are just out of control this episode. Tatiana Maslany’s performance continues to be the main draw and goes a long way towards making me swallow more nonsense that I’d like though.

Hannibal meanwhile followed up last week’s shocker with the expected revelation. I’m not surprised, but I’m more than a little relieved. That said, revealing the big secret to Alana Bloom strikes me as a miscalculation on Jack Crawford’s part. Why tell a secret you want kept from Hannibal Lecter to the woman currently sleeping with Hannibal Lecter? Her mind is putty in his hands, but maybe this leak is what leads to that epic fight between Lecter and Crawford that opened the season. The conclusion of that tease is something I’m incredibly excited to see.

Finally, I squeezed in the penultimate episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. first season before the weekend clock ran out, and there were some good beats and reveals to be found. What worries me though is the effort it’s making to explain and possibly excuse Agent Ward’s treasonous actions. The guy’s crossed some serious lines including murdering people in cold blood, so I can’t see the team welcoming him back into their fold… and yet they continually seem to be leaning that way. Granted, there’s every chance that Ward will be killed off and Antoine Triplett will settle in as the team’s resident muscle (alongside the highly capable Melinda May of course), but it will be a respectably ballsy move if that’s the case.

Rob Hunter has been writing for Film School Rejects since before you were born, which is weird seeing as he's so damn young. He's our Chief Film Critic and Associate Editor and lists 'Broadcast News' as his favorite film of all time. Feel free to say hi if you see him on Twitter @FakeRobHunter.
