Looking Glass sits before a series of screens. Behind him play images of American might in the form of the space race, cowboys, a mushroom cloud, and military men and women. Reflected in his face is the image of a man that we can’t quite make out. Is that Jeremy Irons? Doesn’t quite look like him. Looking Glass seems to be an agent operating against the Rorschachs which doesn’t necessarily mean he’s on Team Veidt. He could just be a mindless governmental drone.
Adelaide Clemens locks and loads as Pirate Jenny. Despite being named after the traditional sea shanty that inspired Alan Moore’s Tales of the Black Freighter, we know very little about her character. She’s not dressed identical to the beat cops, but her outfit has a similar style. Maybe she’s more on a level with Abraham’s character; an enforcer. What I want to know is who they’re transporting in that truck she’s hopping from? Rorschach prisoners? Looking Glass? More strong characters with shotguns?
The Rorschachs reach the climax of their “tick-tock” chant. Is this the entirety of their clan? Are there more cells positioned across the country? At the very least, we should fear any group that finds inspiration in such a rageful character. Whether he’s justified in that anger or not, that disgruntled fury cannot be good for anyone in this new universe. A mighty wrath is on the wind.
Or as Cheif Crawford might chuckle his way through, “Just the end of the world.” With Lost and The Leftovers, Lindelof certainly appreciated a good apocalypse, but Watchmen will allow the showrunner a means to wallow at the end of us all, unlike previous endeavors. The show looks pretty, but its gonna be damn ugly. Whatever good intentions the heroes/villains of the original story might have had when they fooled the world into tranquility they only paused the Doomsday Clock. The ticks and tocks never stop.
The final image of the trailer pins The Comedian’s bloody button on the HBO logo. We’ve been introduced to a lot of new characters here, but this glimpse hints at only a few of the classic protagonists. What remains to be seen is how those individuals that birthed this modern day hell will factor into these new events. So far, Lindelof is doing a lot of hat-tipping, but I’m not sure he’s interested in writing a sequel here. That is definitely for the best.
Watchmen airs on HBO sometime this fall.
