Here’s Jeremy Irons as a much older Adrian Veidt a.k.a. Ozymandias the mastermind. What’s interesting about this shot is the fact that he’s caught in a meditative pose very similar to the one Dr. Manahattan enjoys when vedging out on the surface of Mars. This could hint to their continuing union in the series.

Hey – is that Stalin striking a match on his shoe? As previously stated, the Soviet Union was the greatest threat facing America during the events of the Watchmen graphic novel. When Dr. Manhattan had a nervous breakdown, instigated by Veidt, he fled Earth for Mars. As a result, the USSR invaded Afghanistan forcing America to speed its doomsday clock closer to midnight. The alien invasion moved political fingers away from The Button, but if the Rorschachs succeed in their mission of exposing that lie, tensions between the two countries could erupt once again.

Detective Abraham charges into a trailer of a possible Rorschach. She grabs hold of her rosary/bike chain from her belt and smashes the chump in the face. He goes down hard. Swift justice.

A halo of lights ignites amongst the trees. If you zoom in on the image, past the cows, you can see what appears to be a tiny farmhouse complete with an abandoned automobile and water tanks. This seems to be a perfect middle-of-nowhere hideout for someone or someones who have happily extracted themselves from society.

Adrian Veidt gallops across the countryside riding by a scythe hoisting a jolly roger pirate flag. This is a direct reference to the Tales of the Black Freighter comic-within-the-comic that’s peppered throughout Watchmen. The story centers around a phantom ship that patrols the ocean collecting the souls of dead men. After one sailor narrowly escapes an encounter with the Black Freighter, he cobbles together a few planks of wood to ride the meandering waves. The sailor is desperate to return home so that he can warn others of this demonic spirit, but he is terrified that he’ll be scooped up before doing so. Zack Snyder animated this tale, cast Gerard Butler as the voice of the sailor, and spliced the cartoon into The Ultimate Cut of his film.
