By  · Published on July 15th, 2016

Movies are magical for a number of reasons but one large contributing factor is the visual aspect not available in other forms of art. Aside from the fact that the pictures actually move, which is pretty incredible when you think about it, the use of visual effects helps enhance our viewing experience.

While visual effects have certainly improved over the years, especially when it comes to CGI and how it’s used, they are nothing new to cinema. The legendary Georges Méliès pioneered the use of special effects and filmmakers from Ray Harryhausen to Michel Gondry and everyone in between have been using them since.

Video editor Jim Casey has put together an incredible video that takes viewers on a journey through the evolution of special effects from the late 1800’s to modern day all in a quick 3 minute ride. It’s a fascinating video that highlights the beauty and magic of film.
