Masters of Cinema: Comparing Stanley Kubrick and Andrei Tarkovsky

Kubrick And Tarkovsky

Arguably, no two filmmakers have had more artistic (as opposed to narrative filmmakers like Bergman or Kurosawa) influence on the form than Stanley Kubrick and Andrei Tarkovsky. Each man in his own right is a director of unique and unparalleled vision, men whose creative sensibilities require more than observation, they require absorption and understanding that develops over multiple viewings and thinking away from the film. Their works are puzzle boxes of meaning and symbolism. Hidden in them are the secrets to our universe, at least as perceived by two of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century.

But for all their distinctions, there are some similarities to the separate approaches of Kubrick and Tarkovsky, be them technical, thematic, or even philosophical, and these are the focus of the latest video from essayist Vugar Efendi who has set scenes from the two directors’ various masterpieces side by side to convey where they parallel one another, and where they overlap. Besides being a beautiful essay that captures the very best of both men, it’s also eye-opening in terms of how great art can influence and affect other great art, even indirectly.
