Episode: “The Sleep of Babies” (Season 1, Episode 12)

Synopsis: In need of cash to fund Bobby’s defense, Clay’s solution leaves Samcro in a vulnerable position. What’s supposed to be a happy homecoming for Abel ends in more turmoil for the club.

Review: It is another strong dose of deceit and gun play as television’s best new show steamrolls toward the end of its first season. And if Sons of Anarchy has shown us anything it is that your characters don’t have to be stuck on an island or fending off terrorist attacks in order to deliver great drama — they can also be badass bikers who run guns in central California.

This week’s episode of Sons, the second last of season one, proves once again that this show’s writing team is top-notch. Their ability to unfold and add layers to the plot simultaneously has kept things moving beautifully, keeping the audience glued to their tube in a way that is so rare these days. Also, showrunner Kurt Sutter should be awarded a medal of some kind for assembling this brilliant cast — from the charismatic and boyishly charming Charlie Hunnam as the show’s anchor to the deviously fun to watch Katey Sagal, there may not be a more authentic cast on TV this fall.

The most exciting thing about this week’s Sons of Anarchy episode is that it is not the last of the season — we don’t have to wait to see how Jax and Opie will respond to what happens in the final moments of this episode. And speaking of Opie, who is played by Ryan Hurst, was there not a more poignant moment in this entire season than seeing him sitting at the end of the bed where his kids were sleeping, tears pouring down his face. I’ll admit it — it got to me. But I’ve said enough; if you haven’t watched this week’s episode go watch it now. And if you aren’t on the Sons of Anarchy bandwagon yet, what’s wrong with you?

Up Next Week: The season finale… It’s going to be big.
