Yesterday, The Film Stage reported on Focus Features’ press release for Paul Thomas Anderson’s newest film, which began production this week. It was previously known that Daniel Day-Lewis would star in the film, and that it would take place in the London fashion world in the 1950s, and now more details on the cast and crew have been revealed.
The working title for the film is Phantom Thread – which is a pretty cool title! – and will reportedly feature Lesley Manville (a Mike Leigh regular), Richard Graham (Titanic), and Vicky Krieps (A Most Wanted Man). The Film Stage noted that the initial casting notice called for “young actresses of Eastern European descent” for the female lead, a description which Vicky Krieps fits perfectly. The press release notes that the film “illuminates the life behind the curtain of an uncompromising dressmaker commissioned by royalty and high society”.
It has been confirmed that Jonny Greenwood will score the film. Greenwood’s involvement is especially exciting because this will mark his fourth collaboration with PTA, having previously scored There Will Be Blood (2007), The Master (2012), and Inherent Vice (2014). Greenwood’s film scores are critically acclaimed, as each of them are completely unique and work perfectly with the films they are written for. There Will Be Blood is sparse and ominous, The Master is mysterious, and Inherent Vice is lush and romantic. Greenwood’s scores for PTA are some of his best compositions.
Oftentimes, directors work with the same cast and crew across their different films, and this practice has worked very well for PTA over the years. His most significant collaboration was with Philip Seymour Hoffman, who gave magnificent performances in Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), and The Master (2012). John C. Reilly starred in Hard Eight (1997), Boogie Nights, and Magnolia. And of course, this upcoming project will mark the second collaboration between PTA and Daniel Day-Lewis after There Will Be Blood. In terms of crew, PTA will be working with costume designer Mark Bridges for the eighth time, production designer Mark Tildesley, set decorator Veronique Melery, and editor Dylan Tichenor, all of whom have worked with PTA three times before.
The film will be released by Focus Features later in 2017, and it will probably be incredibly wonderful.
