“Only three people in the world have one of these,” states Bufalino, “and only one of them is Irish.” In mob culture, the pinky ring signifies made men. Sicilian blood is a deep bond, and allowing an outsider like Sheeran into their circle was rare (see also, Goodfellas). The two rings seen here appear to be of the Gold Dollar Coin variety and you can score your own on Amazon for a cool $4,580.
As Hoffa asks Sheeran over the phone, “I hear you paint houses,” we see De Niro’s gunman charge his way into Umberto’s Clam House located on 132 Mulberry Street on Manhattan in Little Italy. The restaurant was owned and operated by the Ianniello Crime Family and also saw it’s fair share of violence.
Weeks after the restaurant opened in 1972, “Crazy Joe Gallo” was celebrating his 43rd birthday with family and friends when a rival gangster sauntered inside and was shot five times. Despite the injuries, Gallo managed to stumble to the street outside where he finally died. Sheeran claims this killing in his memoir, “I look like a broken down truck driver with a cap on, coming to use the bathroom…I don’t look like a mafia shooter.”
Sheeran’s daughter Peggy (Lucy Gallina) stops at the stairs and asks, “Where are you going?” He replies honestly, “I’m going to work.” The child looks downward and takes a tiny step back to her room. She knows something is not “normal” about dad’s nightly routine.
Through his Teamster and military connections, Hoffa organized an operation running guns as well as smuggling various smaller goods. The possibility that some servicemen were in on the scheme further infuriated the Kennedys.
Hoffa and his Teamsters held a firm grip on the New York Taxi business. The companies were asked to pay 30 cents for each cab owned, and as long as they adhered, Hoffa would allow them to operate. Failure resulted in destruction.
