Say goodbye to your Indiegogo record, Rooster Teeth. There’s a new non-original movie crowdfunding on the site and it’s sure to do better than Lazer Team’s $2.5m. As of this posting, the project has raised 10 percent of its $2m goal in only two hours (that’s nearly $200k). I don’t know if it will be the champ speed-wise, but I guarantee it’ll take Indiegogo’s crown for a movie campaign, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it surpasses the second-best Kickstarter amount of $3.1m raised by Zach Braff for Wish I Was Here.
What’s the movie? Obviously you already know, because you clicked on a post with the title in the headline. Super Troopers 2, sequel to 2002’s Super Troopers. You know it, you love it, you’ve watched it a bunch of times. Of course there’s interest in another one, even after 14 years. So why isn’t a studio paying for it? Hollywood loves movies with built-in audiences. This must be one of those cult comedies that bombed at the box office and only found its fans on video and Comedy Central, right? Nope. The original grossed $23m worldwide on a $3m budget!
The Broken Lizard team hasn’t been so successful in its wake, though. Beerfest at least made more money, but it also cost a lot more, too. It barely broke even. And Club Dread and The Slammin’ Salmon performed poorly compared to their budgets. Director Jay Chandrasekhar has had to take gigs like The Dukes of Hazzard and another sequel, Yogi Bear 2, the status of which is currently unknown. His last movie, 2012’s The Babymakers, made less than $8k at the box office. Yes, that’s supposed to be a ‘k,’ not an ‘m.’ Thousands.
So, maybe it seems fair that Fox has agreed to let the guys make the sequel and will even cover the distribution, but after losing money with them before they’re footing them – and in turn the fans – with the bill. The aim appears to be for the movie to premiere at Sundance, where the first one debuted, as early 2016 is the expected delivery for perks like digital downloads and advance screening tickets.
Watch the funny R-rated campaign video below, which takes the form of a new Super Troopers bit starring Chandrasekhar, Kevin Hefernan, Erik Stolhanske, Steve Lemme and Paul Soter.
