HBO’s upcoming documentary profiles Spielberg’s legendary career.

Every time I start a new scene I’m nervous, and when that verges on panic I get great ideas.
– Steven Spielberg

It’s difficult to argue that there’s a more famous, successful, and influential director than Steven Spielberg. His work as a director and producer is so ingrained into pop culture that we’ve coined the term, “Spielbergian.” For many, Spielberg is the man who changed modern cinema but there’s also a generation who have always lived with his work baked into movie culture. HBO’s upcoming documentary titled, Spielberg, looks like an enticing watch for both groups.

Directed by Susan Lacy (American Masters), Spielberg goes all the way back to Spielberg’s college years when he failed to get into USC Film School and also dives into the origins of the infamous Movie Brats, a group of up-and-coming directors (George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola) who went on to change the face of modern cinema. Spielberg has maintained Hollywood’s apex-level director status for so long that it’s intriguing to go back and see his career’s early stages. For today’s young filmmakers, what could be more encouraging than seeing a director of Spielberg’s caliber’s initial struggles?

The doc packs in lots of interviews with actors Spielberg has worked with as well as his filmmaking contemporaries. You can expect to see Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma, and J.J. Abrams (a man whose work is considered the Coke Zero version of Spielberg). Spielberg also features interviews with loads of talent featured in his films. Drew Barrymore, Tom Hanks, and Harrison Ford all make appearances. But don’t expect anything other than glowing praise for the cinematic icon (the trailer even kicks off with some whimsical Spielbergian music).

With The Post and Ready Player One’s release dates closing in fast, it’s a great time to explore Spielberg’s filmography. Spielberg looks like an ideal tour guide for a Spielberg movie deep dive, spotlighting the films you haven’t seen and casting familiar movies in a new light.

Spielberg airs Saturday, October 7 on HBO.

Official synopsis: Through exclusive interviews with actors, family, and the filmmaker himself, this unprecedented documentary pulls back the curtain on the remarkable career of Steven Spielberg. Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Liam Neeson, and many more. Don’t miss the premiere Saturday, October 7.
