Short of the Day

If you like the first scenes of Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure or the intro to The Jetsons – and really, who doesn’t? – then writer-director Meghann Artes’ inventive short film Sleepy Steve is right up your alley.
The concept is simple enough: Steve is a “fuzzy bachelor” who’s robotized his morning routine to be as efficient and hands-free as possible. Brightly lit and shot in a herky-jerky, live-action stop-motion kind of style, the film has a very cartoonish quality to it, personified by Thomas Kelly’s wordless yet expressive and lively performance.
Sometimes you need a bit of entertainment that’s light on the message and meaning and heavy on the fun; Sleepy Steve is that kind of entertainment, thus making it the perfect pick for Friday’s short.
