Picard awakens from the nightmare. Recognizing a distressed state, his trusty Number One rushes to his bedside. We’re waiting for the return of William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) to the series, but not so fast. This first officer is a gentle beast of a different order: a pit bull terrier.

Picard explains to an unknown listener that he returned to the chateau to find safety, but “one is never safe from the past.” His afternoon vino is interrupted when a cloaked woman, not unlike the faceless figure from Data’s painting, stumbles into his farmhouse.

“Please, sir. Someone is after me.” Meet Dahj (Isa Briones); a rumored Borg drone escapee who may be looking for respite from the man who was torn free from similar clutches in “The Best of Both Worlds” episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Star Trek: Picard is said to take place 20 or so years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, and in that time, Starfleet has returned a little more color to their uniforms. As Picard passes through the crowd, we see a lot of engineering gold and science blue, but no command red.

Inside, hanging above everyone’s heads is a hologram projection of the USS Enterprise-D, which exploded into a million little pieces on the surface of Veridian III in Star Trek: Generations. In the time since they left Starfleet, Picard and his crew have drifted into legendary status amongst those adventurers that tread in their footsteps. Possibly the most exciting aspect of this new series is how it observes the passage of time and the pain of retirement that the old dogs of the original series crew could never quite face. While Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan directly addressed Kirk’s terror of aging, the popularity of the films never allowed the characters any distance from the bridge of the Enterprise.

After recognizing the name of the man in front of him, the security officer throws a little ignorant shade: “It’s nice to see you up and around again.” Move along, grandpa.

Picard’s expression says it all: “You jerkwad whippersnapper. I was saving the galaxy when you were gumming your teddy in the crib!” If only there was time to teach this kid a thing or two, but alas…
