In the summer of 2012, approximately 400 goldfish were released into a junior-high-school swimming pool in Sayama Town in Japan’s Saitama Prefecture. The unlikely culprits? Four female students whose only motivation, as told to the police upon their apprehension, was that they “thought the fish would look pretty” there. But was that really the reason?
Based on a true story, the fast-paced short film And So We Put Goldfish in the Pool from writer/director Makoto Nagahisa continually betrays the viewer’s expectations as it explores the real nature of this “criminal impulse.”
