Short of the Day: Dogs, Neon, Slow-Motion, and Techno – What More Do You Need?

The PERFECT weekend movie.

The PERFECT weekend movie.

Serious question, though it isn’t going to sound like one: have you ever wondered what it would look like if Nicolas Winding Refn directed a commercial spot for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show? Yeah, me neither, but today’s short film selection, Birds by pleix, is likely the closest we’ll ever get to such a thing, and as you might expect, it is absurdly captivating.

Succinctly put, the short features an array of dogs moving in slow-motion through a series of neon geometric shapes, all set to a thumping Euro-techno beat. You just can’t make this shit up, and as awesome as my words might cause you to believe the film is, I promise you as a film-lover, a neon-lover, and a dog-lover, it’s much, much cooler.

The concept here? I’m not sure. Why it features dogs but is named for avian creatures? No idea. What I do know is, if you don’t have three minutes and four seconds to spare here at the end of your week for some canine hijinks, you’re just not living right. Play this loud and play it often.
