Sharlto Copley Makes ‘I Am Number 4’ Immediately More Interesting

According to the Heat Vision, Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team) is in talks to co-star in Dreamworks’ I Am Number Four. The film is an adaptation of a young adult sci-fi book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes about a group of nine aliens who disguise themselves as high school students on Earth after their home planet is destroyed by a rival alien species.

The project already has D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) as director and Alex Pettyfer (Stormbreaker) staring as the titular Number Four. Sharlto (what fun name to say) will reportedly play “a man who hailed from the alien world’s serving class but now is the title character’s adult guardian and mentor”. Behind the scenes, Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar wrote the screenplay while Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg are on board to produce.

In my book, thanks to this casting news, Number Four immediately became noteworthy. Sharlto carried the heart of District 9 almost single handedly on his back and it will be fun to see what he brings to this role. DJ Caruso had success with high school themes in Disturbia and hopefully I Am Number Four will bring him back from the so-so shadow of the disappointing Eagle Eye. I’m not familiar with Smallville but Michael Bay’s involvement in any sci-fi project is automatically dubious. However, overall I’m looking forward to seeing how this project turns out.

Does I Am Number 4 sound interesting to you?
