The director humanizes with the human form in mind.

Agnès Varda is a filmmaker known for loving people. Whether through documentary or fiction, Varda has a soft spot for hope in our kind. Her latest, Faces Places, is another populist delve into a community. But much of her work is even more focused on the personal.

Trois Couleurs created a video essay engaged with the body parts of Varda’s filmography. The small gestures, the niches and corners of the human form, are explored in detail that isn’t ogling but reverent.

Never too serious, never too cute, Varda finds wonder and pleasure in the simplicity of another. Respecting a crossed arm as much as a personality trait shared across cultures, Varda knows there’s physical and mental connections bringing us all together. And she sure knows how to film them.
