Netflix invests in their own series set in the Archie universe.

A project that was originally going to be developed for The CW has found a new home. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Sabrina will be heading to Netflix and has already earned itself a two-season twenty-episode order. The series will be based on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a recent comic series that reimagines Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age series that delights in horror, the occult, and witchcraft. The comic book has been described as a mix of Rosemary’s Baby and the Exorcist, depicting Sabrina’s struggle to live as a half-witch, half-mortal. This isn’t the Melissa Joan Hart series that’s for sure.

Due to the incredible success of Riverdale, CW has actively searched for Sabrina for some time now. Even though they had come up with a list of names, that is being revised now given the commitment by Netflix and the big two-season order. Perhaps streaming results from Riverdale appearing on Netflix enticed the streaming giant to make a move in acquiring Sabrina for themselves. Many, including myself, found Riverdale streaming on Netflix and binged the entire series.  Riverdale‘s season two debut grew astoundingly from its midseason series debut, becoming the first evidence of the impact SVOD deals have on network television. Netflix wants to keep that audience on their service not going back to The CW.

Apparently, Netflix wants to move fast on the series saying that the seasons would shoot back-to-back with the first filming from February to June and the second June to October. Netflix hasn’t issued any information about how the series would be rolled out, but assuming we could see the two seasons in one calendar year looks like a good bet.

With Marvel series moving away from streaming services in the future due to the Disney streaming service ambitions, Netflix would be wise to capitalize on the Archie universe. There are plenty of stories to mine from that history for sure.
