There is still something creepy about a mother and her children in isolation from the rest of the world.
It’s always a day (what a lovely day!) when Riley Keough gets cast in something new. Screen Daily has the scoop that Keough will star in The Lodge, which will be directed by the duo who helmed the acclaimed horror film, Goodnight Mommy.
Like Goodnight Mommy, The Lodge will also feature a mother and a couple of kids. However, this time the creepiness factor of said children is indeterminate for now. We do know that the story follows two siblings whose biological mother has died, and the children end up spending the night alone in a remote mountain cabin with their new stepmother. Some supernatural forces then begin to wreak havoc.
We have high hopes for Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz‘s follow-up to their 2015 chiller. FSR’s Rob Hunter very much enjoyed Goodnight Mommy at Fantasia over two years ago, and the film made it into our list of best horror movies released in 2015. Fiala and Franz are no strangers to dealing with themes of isolation, family and deteriorating mental faculties. Goodnight Mommy centers on two boys who aren’t convinced their mother, who has had reconstructive facial surgery, is exactly who she says she is. Per Hunter, “as the two sides battle it out viewers are kept up in the air as to who to believe, and the film manages to maintain that uncertainty all the way through to the end.” Fiala and Franz’s ability to create an unpredictable story within a generally trope-ish, even expected horror environment already makes The Lodge seem rather promising.
For her part, Keough has been praised time and time again for her various performances, and she’s done so while navigating the fictive worlds of a bunch of acclaimed directors. Keough had an iconic supporting role in George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road and Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, and has led two Steven Soderbergh projects to date (season 1 of the television adaptation of The Girlfriend Experience, and Logan Lucky). Keough has also had some experience with the horror genre, appearing in It Comes At Night, which opened earlier this year. She’ll lead The Lodge easily.
Fiala and Franz will co-write The Lodge as they did with Goodnight Mommy, except this time with the addition of Sergio Casci (the film will be based on Casci’s original concept). Keough will next be seen in David Robert Mitchell’s Under The Silver Lake, Justin Kelly’s Welcome The Stranger and Lars Von Trier’s The House That Jack Built, all due out next year.
