The Oscar winner plays a trained killer in this upcoming espionage thriller.

Despite drawing instant comparisons to Black Widow and last year’s Atomic Blonde, Red Sparrow is its own demon. Based on the novel by Jason Matthews, the movie stars Jennifer Lawrence and depicts the transformation of a Russian ballerina into a weapon highly trained in psychological manipulation. She is put into a no-win scenario where she must either accept training to become a Sparrow, or she will die.

Just because Red Sparrow follows the recent trend of female-led action movies, audiences are quick to compare them against each other — something that isn’t usually done for the millions of similar male action movies. This might also be the sort of thing that doesn’t get made once the sale of Fox to Disney is complete. It’s a violent, sexual spy thriller in the vein that the Mouse House hasn’t shown willingness to touch in recent years. Perhaps the only issue audiences will likely take with this movie is that a super capable woman gets turned because of the influence of a man.

The original trailer didn’t show much of the plot, but we get a much broader picture of the story with this new spot for Red Sparrow:

Here’s an official plot synopsis:

Dominika Egorova is many things. A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs. A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit.

A master of seductive and manipulative combat. When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.

Red Sparrow opens in theaters on March 2nd.
