The proposed plot of the fifth installment changed a couple of times over the last decade. The film was initially pitched as Rambo V: The Savage Hunt, in which Rambo would lead a special forces team on a mission to take down a genetically engineered creature. While it would have been interesting to see Rambo dive into a Sci-fi/Action thriller, they eventually decided to keep the movie closer to the franchise’s roots.

In 2011, a new screenplay was written by Sean Hood, which he said would be “more in line with the small-town thriller of First Blood.” This idea ties nicely into the title of this film, Last Blood. It looks like they returned to the original 2009 pitch, which involved a story of Rambo battling drug cartels. Whether he is still going to be rescuing the kidnapped daughter of a friend of his remains uncertain, but here, it appears that he does have encounters with a Mexican drug cartel.

“And if they come looking for me…they will welcome death.”
