The Professor Marston trailer gets the Sin City treatment.

For some odd reason, 2017 has been the year of Stephen King. All year long, projects based on King’s work — It, Gerald’s Game, Mr. Mercedes, The Mist, The Dark Tower, and Castle Rock — have taken up residence on movie screens, TVs, streaming services, and social media feeds. If I had to choose a runner-up there’s only one choice: Wonder Woman. The first lady of DC Comics may not match the omnipresence of King’s body of work this year but you can argue she’s made a greater cultural impact. Wonder Woman owned the summer box office, rekindled interest in DC’s movie slate, won over a generation of new fans and proved audiences will turn out to watch ass-kicking ladies in their comic book movies. And to mark 2017 as the year of Diana Prince’s coming out party, Annapurna Pictures will release Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, a biopic based on the life of Wonder Woman’s creator.

The good news is Professor Marston and the Wonder Women drops this Friday. Although it’s not a Wonder Woman movie it serves as an excellent companion piece to the character’s summer blockbuster and the upcoming Justice League movie. It’s going to be fascinating charting the character’s evolution from her subversive origins all the way to her breakout year. The film tells the real-life story American psychologist William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans) and how his “unconventional life” inspired him to create the character Wonder Woman. The film is directed by Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S.) and stars Rebecca Hall as his wife Elizabeth and Bella Heathcote as his “mistress” Olive Byrne

The film’s hook is that Marston is what we would conventionally label as kinky. Marston and his wife embraced sexual freedom and engaged in three-way love affairs during a sexually repressed era. Marston’s personal fetishes (bondage and sexual domination) made their way into issues of Wonder Woman at a time when comics were only for children. The film doesn’t seem to paint Marston and his wife as deviants either; based on the trailer, it looks like they’re portrayed as forward-thinking and unconventional.

To get us in the mood for Professor Marston and the Wonder Women’s release this Friday, Annapurna dropped a new trailer on their YouTube channel. While the latest trailer doesn’t show us anything we haven’t seen in the film’s previous trailer, today’s trailer is 1001% better. Some marketing guru decided to transform their fine but run-of-the-mill trailer into a video comic strip, and the result is dope. Take a look below.

Here’s the official synopsis listed on Annapurna’s YouTube Channel.

In a superhero origin tale unlike any other, PROFESSOR MARSTON & THE WONDER WOMEN is the incredible true story of what inspired Harvard psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston to create the iconic Wonder Woman character in the 1940’s. While Marston’s feminist superhero was criticized by censors for her ‘sexual perversity’, he was keeping a secret that could have destroyed him. Marston’s muses for the Wonder Woman character were his wife Elizabeth Marston and their lover Olive Byrne, two empowered women who defied convention: working with Marston on human behavior research — while building a hidden life with him that rivaled the greatest of superhero disguises.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women arrives in theaters October 13, 2017, and Wonder Woman returns to theaters on November 17, 2017, in Justice League.
