Amazon’s ‘Electric Dreams’ looks to mystify and intrigue.

It’s a great week to be a sci-fi fan. New York Comic-Con is delivering exciting new trailers faster than a sci-fi nerd like me can keep up. I’ve barely had time to mark Pacific Rim: Uprising, Replicas, and Future Man on my calendar before getting sidetracked by another promising release. And somehow, today’s announcement by Amazon has me more excited than the previous three titles combined.

Amazon’s upcoming program, Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, is a 10-episode sci-fi anthology series based on the work of the legendary author, Philip K. Dick. Dick’s stories fueled the imaginations of an entire generation of sci-fi writers and Hollywood has adapted his work into the films Blade Runner, Total Recall, and Minority Report. Michael Dinner will serve as executive producer and showrunner and Battlestar Galactica’s Ronald D. Moore is signed on as an executive producer and writer.

Here’s the official synopsis listed by the UK’s Channel 4:

Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams is a sci-fi anthology series of ten epic, ambitious and moving standalone episodes, each set in a different and unique world – some which lie in the far reaches of the universe and time and others which are much, much closer to home. While the stories may be worlds apart, central to each is the poignant and warm exploration of the importance and significance of humanity.

Each episode is inspired by one of Philip K. Dick’s renowned shorts stories and has been adapted by an exciting list of leading British and American writers and directors. The series also features an all-star roster of cast who head up this thrilling, audacious and emotional journey into the far reaches of imagination.

If you’re still on the fence after reading that synopsis, wait until you read the names in Electric Dream’s cast: Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Timothy Spall (Harry Potter Series), Anna Paquin (True Blood), Benedict Wong (Marco Polo), Terrence Howard (Empire) Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine), Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad). That’s a pretty stacked cast of series headliners.

There’s currently a giant Black Mirror sized hole in my heart and with Halloween creeping up I need something to fill it. My list of TV programs to catch up on is so long I’m hesitant to add more serialized hour-long shows, so an anthology series is a perfect fit. What’s most disheartening is that Electric Dreams is already airing in the UK on Channel 4 but Amazon hasn’t released a US launch date. For now, all I can do is sit and rewatch Electric Dream’s hypnotic trailer.
