Gotta collect all the Jaegers.

Universal has released the final trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising and John Boyega is ready to take down some Kaiju. The scale for Pacific Rim is much larger this time around as Boyega will be joined by a team of updated Jaegers. They have been formed to destroy a new threat that has been unleashed on Earth. There will be plenty of new faces and some returning ones as well. Scott EastwoodCailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi co-star in the film.

Official Synopsis:

The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.”  Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld.  But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war.  As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left.  Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.

With each new trailer Pacific Rim Uprising looks less like the original and more like Transformers. With Guillermo del Toro at the helm, Pacific Rim was an extension of his love for monsters and Japanese animation. Additionally there was a love story that never felt forced and was specifically about connection, something that is at the very heart of Pacific Rim.

Pacific Rim Uprising is content with creating a new toy line with a robot for every child. Whether that is the intention of director Steven S. DeKnight or not, Uprising is missing the spirit of the original. The creative team behind Uprising believes this might be the beginning of a giant franchise. There is no better way to expand a series than to create a whole task force of Jaegers. That being said, if you enjoy giant robots smashing equally giant monsters, this will fit the bill.

Pacific Rim Uprising will open in theaters on March 23, 2018.
