Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders are the latest additions to the cast of the Spidey sequel.

The cast of Spider-Man: Far From Home just won’t stop expanding. Between the long list of returning Homecoming cast members, including Tom Holland and Michael Keaton, and the addition of Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio, the second MCU Spidey movie won’t be short on serious talent. Nor will it be lacking in fan favorite characters.

According to a report from Vulture, Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders are the latest additions to the movie. That’s right, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury and Maria Hill be making their way back to the MCU in Far From Home.

Spoilers for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ below

Now, you may recall that the last time we checked in with these two, they were reduced to piles of ash after Thanos unleashed the power of the Infinity Stones. But, you know, so was Peter Parker, and he’s apparently getting on just fine. And it’s pretty safe to assume that most of those characters disintegrated in Infinity War‘s climax are coming back anyway (as if they’re not going to make a Black Panther sequel).

Fury and Hill have made a number of appearances here and there in various Marvel properties, although they’ve often been used in smaller roles in recent years. But between this and his role as the de-aged, two-eyed younger Nick Fury in the upcoming 1990s-set Captain Marvel, 2019 is set to be a much bigger year for Jackson in the MCU.

Meanwhile, poor Maria Hill has been stuck being a part-time Avenger for years. One whom the team members occasionally hang out with but then just seem to forget about one movie later. With Far From Home being her first credited MCU role since 2015, we could be in for a Smulders resurgence very soon.

But what can we expect from the two fan favorites when they show up in the anticipated Spidey sequel? For a start, neither character (or S.H.I.E.L.D. for that matter) has come into contact with the webslinger yet. And despite Spidey being urged by Tony Stark to “stay close to the ground” in Homecoming, it’s difficult to imagine this being a possibility after the events of Infinity War.

It would appear likely then that Spidey has found himself on S.H.I.E.L.D.’s radar at some point, with Fury and Hill on the case. And with Far From Home set to be a globetrotting adventure of sorts, perhaps Peter’s gotten himself in trouble for violating the Sokovia Accords (remember those?). Although these days it’s all a bit vague with regards to what S.H.I.E.L.D. actually does. They certainly don’t appear to be keeping tabs on superpowered people like they were in the old days, so maybe it’s not Spidey they’re after.

The fact that the film will feature at least two villains (Vulture and Mysterio), with others left open to return after Homecoming, may also be a clue as to what Fury and Hill are up to. With Shocker and the future Scorpion left alive, they’d only be two away from making up a certain villainous team that Sony has been trying to put on the big screen forever. And with the recent casting of J.B. Smoove in a mysterious lead role, we may be closer to seeing the Sinister Six than we think.

If this is the case, that a team of supervillains is joining forces and putting schemes into motion all over the world, then you’d have to imagine S.H.I.E.L.D. being all over that. Whether they’d be working with the wallcrawler on the case is another matter entirely. After all, an unregulated teenager getting involved with their business is hardly a good look for a spy agency.

Perhaps Peter comes into direct conflict with them while trying to stop the bad guys, and they perceive him as getting in the way. Or maybe Fury and Hill’s history with superheroes gives them a soft spot for Spidey, and they decide to work together to stop the villainous team.

However they factor into the story, it’s always enjoyable to see these characters return. With the upcoming Marvel movies, it feels like extra effort is being made to fill the supporting casts with recognizable faces. And if that means seeing some of our favorite actors return to strengthen the connection between each entry, I’m absolutely here for it.
