Amazon Prime is the only streaming service with a cost that also gets you free shipping, and that my friends is a deal. They’re in the Original programming game, but their biggest offering remains the ton of films available to watch anytime for Prime members.
The complete list of titles hitting Amazon Prime this month — July 2019 — is below, but first I’m going to shower some affection and point some eyeballs towards a few specific titles.
Amazon Prime Pick of the Month
David Robert Mitchell struck gold with his sophomore film It Follows (2015), but his third feature has had a rough road reaching audiences. That’s a shame as Under the Silver Lake (2019) is not only Mitchell’s best movie, but it’s also among the best of 2019. Andrew Garfield headlines — beautifully with a superb sense of comic delivery and timing — as a young man searching for a missing woman in Los Angeles. It’s a blackly comic and utterly twisted riff on the LA noir, and while it expresses immense love for the city the film also calls out all of its hypocrisies. At its center is a brutal condemnation of male entitlement, and the way in which it’s able to manage that while also being incredibly funny and delightfully absurd is nothing short of magical.
New From the Creator of Preacher
Garth Ennis is known in the world of comics for creating stories with interesting narratives, eclectic characters, and extremes both violent and sexual, and while Preacher remains a favorite it’s far from his only creation. The Boys ran for 72 issues from 2006 to 2012, and now it’s coming to Prime on July 26th in the form of season one of a new series. The show, like the comic, follows a group of superheroes in a world where superheroes are both a known quantity and a douchey collective. Some are egotistical celebrities, others drift towards true villainy, and some dare to uphold the ideals that led to superheroes in the first place. It should be great fun.
A Remake With Heart
Some remakes are good, and some are bad. That’s just a fact. My Bloody Valentine (2009) belongs to the former camp as it reboots the 80s slasher classic with style, gore, and a lot of personality. This first pairing of director Patrick Lussier and writer Todd Farmer delivers a love letter to genre fans and plenty of fun, and what it lacks in seriousness it more than makes up for in bloodletting and charm.
Two Fantastic Films That Are Wholly Unrelated
Look, while I try to categorize these monthly picks into some kind of theme that isn’t always going to be the case. This double feature, for example, pairs together two films that share nothing but greatness. Gone Baby Gone (2007) is a crime thriller about a pair of private detectives searching for a missing boy, and in addition to being Ben Affleck’s directorial debut it’s also still his very best film — and one of 2007’s best films period. There’s mystery, suspense, rich characters, and one hell of a gut punch to its ending. Arctic (2019) arrives on July 31st, and it stars Mads Mikkelsen as a plane crash survivor struggling to keep that streak alive. There are thrilling sequences, beautiful landscapes, and devastating emotional beats, and all of them have Mikkelsen at their core.
