23. “Weaving a Story 2: oral stage” (Episode 20)
This episode is known for recapping a lot of the earlier events of the series, but I love this shot of Shinji’s plugsuit. The EVA pilots wear this suit in order to synchronize with the EVAs, but in this instance, Shinji has disappeared into the dimensional fabric of the mech.
22. “Hedgehog’s Dilemma” (Episode 4)
After Shinji decides not to pilot EVA again, he is waiting to leave Tokyo-3. I love the background of the NERV symbol here, and it has definitely become synonymous with the franchise.
21. “Those Women Longed For the Touch of Others’ Lips, and Thus Invited Their Kisses” Episode 15)
This striking religious symbolism is seen at the tail end of Episode 15 when Misato finally learns of NERV’s scheming. Pictured here is the angel Lilith with the Spear of Longinus buried inside it.
20. Introjection (Episode 19)
After refusing to battle EVA Unit 03 because he didn’t want to kill his friend Toji, Shinji is jailed for insubordination. I love the way the shadows are at play here with Gendo in the background towering over Shinji while he is behind bars.
19. “Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win!” (Episode 9)
In order to synchronize their attacks, Shinji and Asuka must play a game that looks like a cross between Simon and Twister.
18. “Angel Attack” (Episode 1)
There are a ton of shots in the first episode that set up the grandeur and foreboding that will be around the entire series. But for my money, I love this shot of Shinji existing within the palm of something bigger than him. It’s the symbolism of him being just a tool to accomplish a goal. NERV and EVA have him and they won’t be letting go.
17. “Ambivalence” (Episode 18)
As Shinji’s EVA Unit 01 decimates EVA Unit 03, blood splatters the streets and buildings of Tokyo-3. NERV HQ looks on in horror as the carnage unfolds in front of them. This shot of the blood on the ground is that moment encapsulated.
