Mission: Impossible — Mummy Protocol Proves all Tom Cruise Movies are Essentially the Same

Louis Plamondon’s mash-up says what we’ve all been thinking.

Is it just me, or does every Tom Cruise movie of the last decade feel like a Mission: Impossible movie? Jack Reacher – low-tech M:I; Edge of Tomorrow – sci-fi M:I; Oblivion – post-apocalyptic sci-fi M:I; Rock of Ages – musical M:I.

This isn’t to say that Cruise is a one-note actor (though it isn’t not saying that, either) but rather that the films for which he’s cast all fit the same kind of mold, protagonist-wise: a capable but heroically-flawed man, usually single, who plays by his own rules, lets his actions do the talking, and as a result spends most of his time on-screen either running, screaming, or making the O-face of your nightmares.

No one needs to see that.

Take The Mummy, whose first trailer was released this week. Yeah, it’s got a mummy in it, and yeah, that mummy has some decidedly supernatural powers, but it still just feels like a Mission: Impossible movie to me. And I’m not the only one.

Louis Plamondon thinks so too, and he’s taken things a step further by kinda proving it with this stellar mash-up he made for Screen Crush combining Tom’s Impossible exploits with clips from The Mummy trailer. The result is Mission: Impossible – Mummy Protocol, and it’s the best thing Cruise has been in since Magnolia. Just press play, you’ll see what I mean.

What did I tell you? I haven’t seen a Tom Cruise flick in the theaters since Collateral, but I’d gladly plunk down some coin for this one. Fingers crossed that Cruise gets desperate enough, soon enough to make this a reality. Stranger projects get greenlit every day.

The Mummy opens June 9th of next year, and the actual M:I 6 is in pre-production now aiming for a July 27, 2018 release.
