This webseries may be made by queer black women for queer black women, but its quality is something anyone can see.
Webseries have only recently been getting the critical attention they deserve. And they’re still mostly thought of as spawning great comedy series (High Maintenance, Broad City, etc), not dramas. A lot of that has to do with networks like Comedy Central actively searching for new talent through social media. But it also has to do with the subjects represented. Webseries gives the creators full control over their product, something only really offered by a small handful of streaming networks.
So when telling the story of a black lesbian polyamorous couple living in Brooklyn trying to be radical honesty, you’re gonna need full creative control. Such is the story of the new webseries 195 Lewis. The webseries is made by queer black women, for queer black women. The show’s creators are the same people behind An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, the ingenious feature that premiered at Sundance.
The show manages to beautifully open up the safe world that the characters have carved for themselves to an audience with a similar lived experience, or with enough respectful curiosity to watch and listen. Above all, the series is about black intimacy, black female intimacy. It hits record on a world that has existed for decades but has only until recently been overlooked.
