It’s arguable that this mash-up of a terrifying movie where a top-hatted monster menaces small children and The Babadook could use more Seuss, but instead of merely overlapping two incongruous ideas, the balance created here by Horror Report serves to show the paper-thin line between terror and slapstick. On one end is The Cat in the Hat, which might normally seem candy-coated and wacky. On the other end is the psychological horror that comes with the ever-present force of danger inherent in raising a child.
But both feature single mothers trying their best to raise kiddos in spite of a chaotic, fantastical figure entering their lives. Beyond some silly rhyming, that aforementioned line between the fearful and absurd seems a bit fuzzier after watching this. [h/t Short List]
