Special Agent Dale Cooper might suit up once again.

David Lynch has decided to talk about that controversial Twin Peaks finale. Two weeks ago, Twin Peaks: The Return aired its two-part finale and there are plenty of questions still lingering in the minds of many fans. Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern have both gone on record since talking about the show, the finale, and whether or not they’d be down for more Twin Peaks. Both of them emphatically said they would return, but is Lynch done with the world of Twin Peaks?

In support of his “Small Stories” exhibition at the Belgrade Culture Centre (Kulturni Centar Beograda) in Serbi, David Lynch appeared via Skype for a Q&A session in a packed house. Welcome to Twin Peaks provided some of the video taken from the interview. It was his first time appearing in public since the Twin Peaks finale. Many fans were eager to jump right in and ask questions Lynch himself isn’t prepared to answer.

One specific question dealt with the fate of Audrey Horne. The very last shot of episode 15 eluded to the fact that something was very wrong in Audrey’s world. It was entirely glossed over in the finale and fans are seeking closure. Lynch’s answer was simply, “What matters is what you believe happened. Many things in life just happen and we have to come to our own conclusions. You can, for example, read a book that raises a series of questions, and you want to talk to the author, but he died a hundred years ago. That’s why everything is up to you.” Twin Peaks has always been more than what is seen on screen. There will certainly be many conclusions to her fate and that’s exactly how Lynch prefers it.

As far as Lynch continuing the adventures of Agent Cooper and Laura Palmer—it is too early discuss. There are currently no plans from Showtime to continue Twin Peaks and David Lynch says here that it would take a few years to bring everything together. He added, “It took me four and a half years to write and film this season.” Something special would have to happen for all those actors to come together once again in a few years time, but perhaps we shouldn’t rule anything out. Twin Peaks: The Return did arrive 25 years after the original.
