Living in Agatha Christie’s universe, can we trust the family’s most rageful response? Are these heightened outbursts performative for the detectives’ benefit, or are we merely witnessing the joys of whodunit melodrama? Hard to say, but there is no arguing with Toni Collette’s insolent animosity.
Out comes the magnifying glass. You can’t have an Agatha Christie adventure without a magnifying glass or two. The miniature variety further establishes Blanc as a bit of a buffoon easily dismissable by the family. If they’re playing characters, he might as well too.
The trailer’s last batch of shots promises the audience that not all of Knives Out will take place inside the Thrombey estate. Here Marta discovers a corpse tied to a chair. She pulls out her most trusted investigative tool, an iPhone, to capture any body born clues.
Flash, a spider crawls across the corpse’s face.
There may be nary a sight of an X-Wing in Knives Out, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be absent of action. Ransom and Marta team-up and evade the police in a high-speed pursuit. It doesn’t look like Ransom is too comfortable with Marta’s obvious skills. Eyes shut, she’s using the force to squeeze through that tight alley.
Blanc wraps up with “I suspect foul play” (no shit, Sherlock) “and I’ve eliminated no suspects.” Nana (K Callan) responds to his most obvious statement with a chuckle. Or, more likely, she’s laughing at the infuriating will of Harlan Thrombey. The kiddies don’t look like they got the booty they were expecting.
Blanc flips his coin, and the Knives Out trailer guarantees your attendance, just in case you weren’t watching, by namedropping one unbelievable talent after the other.
If Blanc is not impressed, Ransom certainly is. Oh my.
Blanc has his dander up, putting grim gravitas on his final thought of the trailer, “It’s a twisted web and we are not finished untangling it, not yet.” The family stares darkly towards the estate. Linda shows a glimmer of concern for what is unfolding before her.
Again, Ransom doesn’t care. “What is this? C.S.I. K.F.C.?” At the very least, Detective Archer seems charmed by the kid’s prickish nature. Blanc doesn’t falter from his role as the film’s Poirot.
The detective stands at the wheel of knives and does a classic about-face as if he’s about to declare, “It was Colonel Mustard in the library with the candlestick.” Or better yet, maybe he’s ready to remove one of the gruesome daggers himself. The coat has come off, and the time to play on the same dirty level as the Thrombey family clan has arrived. As they say, if you can’t beat them, join them.
Knives Out cuts into theaters on Thanksgiving Day.
