‘Justice League’ Trailer: It’s All Heroes and Flying Bugs

What the world really needs is more of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman.

What the world really needs is more of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman.

Whether or not Justice League is going to right all the wrongs of Batman v. Superman remains to be seen. As someone on record as thinking BvS was a mess, I’ll be reserving judgment until November when JL hits theaters. But for now, each and every trailer released by Warner Bros. has made the coming together of The League far more enticing. This could have a lot to do with the promised change in tone by Zack Snyder, the influence of Joss Whedon, who was brought on to finish Snyder’s film after a family tragedy forced him to step back, or it’s simply just someone cutting better trailers. Either way, Justice League continues to look better and better.

That said, Steppenwolf and his flying alien bug-man army are weird.

Here are some things that are working in this new trailer, at least for yours truly (an on-record BvS and Suicide Squad cynic):

  1. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman needs to be in this movie for 90% of its runtime. He’s electric and I want more, bruh.
  2. Moving Wonder Woman to the forefront of the marketing is a good choice. Hopefully, her role in leading the team into battle will be similarly inflated, as she’s the real star here. (Sorry, Batfleck.)
  3. Barry Allen as comic relief works more than I expected. Perhaps my expectations were skewed by the somewhat dour version of The Flash we’ve been given on The CW over the past few years. Maybe he doesn’t need Cisco in order to be fun.

The other interesting idea presented in this trailer is the shadow of the recently deceased Superman. Any attentive fan of the property knows that this is all badly-played slight of hand, as a certain handsome actor has been openly shooting scenes for Justice League. Sometimes it’s funny to watch a studio try and market a movie as if it exists in a vacuum. For some audiences, that might be true. Somewhere in this world, there’s someone headed out to see Daddy’s Home 2 who didn’t even realize that a new Justice League movie was coming out. And they’ll have no idea that Superman is coming back in this movie. For the rest of us, that illusion was smashed with some attention paid to the final moments of Batman v Superman. Sometimes I wish I could live in the blissfully ignorant state of that other person. Then again, that means I’d willingly be going to see Daddy’s Home 2. And we can’t have that.
