The Italian Film References of ‘Master of None’

Master of None season 2
By  · Published on October 24th, 2017

A vacation at its best becomes a lesson in culture.

Master of None spent its first season lounging around in American ennui, looking for satisfaction in a world that pushed its main characters towards meaningless success. When Aziz Ansari’s lead left the country, playing hooky with his life, it was an escape towards a world he felt more connected to.

This world is that of rural Italy. The careful food preparation, the disconnected society, the timelessness of it all – these were what drew him to the country and what the show took from Italy’s rich film history.

Ignacio Montalvo’s new video matches the enthusiastic homages to their sources (including Antonioni and Fellini) with as much calm reverence as Ansari surprisingly pulls out in the second season of the Netflix original.
