Okay, maybe that ‘us’ should simply be ‘me.’ Because hot damn I’m excited for this movie!
Kim Ji-woon is the brilliant director behind The Quiet Family, A Tale of Two Sisters, A Bittersweet Life, and The Good the Bad the Weird, and while his name isn’t tossed around as often as Park Chan-wook’s and Bong Joon-ho’s his talents are most definitely on par with them both. His new film is I Saw the Devil and it stars Lee Byung-hun (G.I. Joe) as a man devastated by his girlfriend’s murder who chooses to channel that grief into rage and sets out to get revenge on the serial killer played by Choi Min-sik (Oldboy). Kim has proven himself time and again to be an incredibly visual director as well as one who values narrative and character. And while I love The Good the Bad the Weird, it’s definitely nice to see him returning to the darker themes of his past films. Let’s hope a company like IFC picks this one up to guarantee it’s treated right.
I Saw the Devil opens in South Korea this summer and should hopefully reach our shores sometime soon after…
