The Shape of Water director has just added to his extremely busy slate.

Some people are just addicted to the work they do. Guillermo del Toro, despite being in the thick of an Oscar campaign for his film The Shape of Water, is just about everywhere these days. Recently he appeared at the Video Game Awards showcasing a trailer for his new film and promoting a new video game by Hideo Kojima. We recently reported that he has given up directing Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark, although he remains a producer on that film and Pacific Rim Uprising.  Nevermind that he is also developing a Fantastic Voyage remake with James Cameron. Well, he’s not done yet.

Variety is reporting that Guillermo del Toro has two more projects in the work. Fox Searchlight is in early negotiations for Hostiles director Scott Cooper’s new film. Antlers is a supernatural picture and Del Toro is eager to have the opportunity to work with Cooper on his new film venture as Del Toro plans to join the picture in a producer capacity. Apparently, the movie follows a young teacher who discovers that her troubled student’s family harbor a deadly supernatural secret. Now the teacher must take the boy into her care and fight against unimaginable horrors.

The other project Del Toro is looking at is a remake of the noir Nightmare Alley. He wants to direct a remake of the 1947 picture and that would decidedly be a different genre for him to approach given his filmography. It won’t be his next directing gig since the script for a remake hasn’t been written yet, but he plans to co-write with Kim Morgan. The original featured performances by Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell and told the story of a young con-man who teams up with a female psychiatrist. At first, the relationship is mutually beneficial as they con people out of their money with a mentalist act, but then she gains the upper hand.

We will likely be seeing a lot more of Del Toro heading into the awards movie season. The Shape of Water picked up the most Golden Globe nominations for any film this year when nominations were announced. It is also the best-reviewed movie of his career and many critics would agree that it is his best picture since Pan’s Labyrinth. Whether he ultimately gets to direct Nightmare Alley remains to be seen, but there are plenty of Del Toro projects on the horizon.
