Gerwig has set the record straight regarding her past and future working relationship with Woody Allen.

Lady Bird has been a favorite this award season and for good reason, it is an extremely well-directed film by Greta Gerwig. The fact that she was not nominated for a directing award was not lost on Natalie Portman during the Golden Globes and it isn’t lost on the directors that have been nominated. Now Greta Gerwig is facing questions regarding her work with Woody Allen in To Rome with Love.

Allen, for his part, has been accused numerous times of sexual misconduct, yet Hollywood has done little to punish him. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Gerwig discussed working with Allen and the allegations that follow the director in his work.

Gerwig said, “It is something that I take very seriously and have been thinking deeply about, and it has taken me time to gather my thoughts and say what I mean to say. I can only speak for myself and what I’ve come to is this: If I had known then what I know now, I would not have acted in the film.” Gerwig obviously regrets working on the film and now she has promised not to work with Allen again. She adds, “I have not worked for him again, and I will not work for him again.”

This is in response to the numerous op-eds that Dylan Farrow has written over the years where she was sexually assaulted by Allen. It probably has been difficult for Gerwig to accept the fact that a man who has influenced much of her work could possibly be so vile. She regrets her decisions causing “another woman’s pain”, and that she was “I was heartbroken by that realization. I grew up on his movies, and they have informed me as an artist, and I cannot change that fact now, but I can make different decisions moving forward.”

The Times article is a conversation between Arron Sorkin and Greta Gerwig and goes into detail about the current revolution in Hollywood to give more women opportunities. Conducted by Frank Bruni, it is an intriguing interview between two screenwriters who might be the front-runners for best screenplay in their respective categories. While Gerwig has decided not to work with Allen again, other actresses need to refuse work from the director as well to really make a significant change.
